Birch Hill Catering began in 1936 as Herbert’s a small delicatessen on Madison Avenue in New York’s Capital City, Albany, NY.
Word of mouth spread about the quality of the food and excellent service and the business grew quickly. In 1940, Dr. Albert Einstein and his party had lunch at Herbert’s.
Working side-by-side with his son Erwin, Harry grew the business. The delicatessen grew to become a premiere restaurant and bar; and then finally progressed to specializing events and catering – now known as Birch Hill Catering.
Tragedy Strikes – The Feldman’s Rebuild
In 1974, a fire broke out and destroyed Herbert’s original home. Determined to continue serving the Capital Region, the family moved to Washington Avenue, Albany NY and rebuilt.
Herbert’s / Birch Hill Catering has managed many dining establishments over the years, including Daddy’Os, Malmart, Snack Shack, NYSUT, Colonie Golf & Country Club, and the Albany Business College; to name a few.
In 1987 Steven Feldman, the third generation of management, moved Birch Hill Catering to its current stunning location down a country lane in Castleton-on-the Hudson, just minutes from Albany NY where it celebrates hundreds of unique events each year.
Birch Hill has enjoyed a long, rich history, and continues to adapt to trends and fulfill dreams by providing exactly what brides, party-planners, families and businesses want.
